In 2009-10 Theodora Hanslowe again returns to the roster of the Metropolitan Opera and sings the role of Countess in Shostakovich's The Nose with the illustrious company; sings as soloist in Messiah with the Nashville Symphony; Israelitish Man in Handel's Judas Maccabeus with Berkshire Choral Festival; in Schoenberg's chamber arrangement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with Sinfonietta of Riverdale; and in recital at Ithaca College. She sang Flora in La traviata at the Metropolitan Opera in 2008-09, a role which she reprised for the Opening Night Gala, broadcast live in movie theaters internationally. In the 2010-11 season she again joins the roster of the Metropolitan Opera to sing Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor.
She opened her 2008-09 season by performing the demanding title role in the final performance of Santa Fe Opera's American premiere of Saariaho's Adriana Mater to resounding acclaim. Also in 2008-09 she sang as soloist in Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass and Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music, both with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra; in Hahn's Tomorrow, with Doug Varone and Dancers (Joyce Theatre, NY); and in Dillon's Still Point, in concert at Mannes School of Music. During the summer of 2009 she appears as soloist with the Salt Bay Chamberfest in the world premiere of songs by Pulitzer Prize nominee Tamar Muskal.
Since her debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, her subsequent roles for the company include Unulfo in Rodelinda, Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri, Bersi in Andrea Chenier, Tebaldo in Don Carlo, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, the title role in La Cenerentola, Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, and Stephano in Roméo et Juliette.
Other highlights for the celebrated mezzo-soprano include her San Francisco Opera debut as Angelina in La Cenerentola, Giulietta in Les Contes d'Hoffmann with Cleveland Opera, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi at Spoleto Festival USA and Washington Concert Opera, Béatrice in Béatrice et Bénédict with Washington Concert Opera, and Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus with Baltimore Opera. She has sung Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking with Michigan Opera Theatre, Baltimore Opera and Opera Pacific; Nicklausse in Les Contes d'Hoffmann with Washington Opera; Dorabella in Così fan tutte with Michigan Opera Theatre; Orphée in Orphée et Eurydice with Opera Colorado; Hänsel in Hänsel and Gretel with the Baltimore Opera and New York City Opera; Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri with Los Angeles Opera; and Ino in Semele with the Handel & Haydn Society.
Theodora Hanslowe has performed in opera houses throughout the world. She recreated the title role in Massenet's Chérubin with the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, where the opera had its premiere. Her debut at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires was as the Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos. She has sung the title role in La Cenerentola with L'Opéra de Montréal, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and Florida Grand Opera. She has appeared as Rosina with Festival de Musique de Strasbourg, Florida Grand Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and the New Israeli Opera.
Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Ms. Hanslowe has been soloist in Britten's Spring Symphony with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and André Previn, Beethoven's Mass in C with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Symphony No. 9 with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Mozart's Requiem with the Indianapolis Symphony and Raymond Leppard, performances and a recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor with Boston Baroque and Martin Pearlman on the Telarc label, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, and as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the Symphony Hall Centennial Gala. Ms. Hanslowe has performed several times with the Cincinnati and Indianapolis symphonies, and made her Carnegie Hall debut singing Berlioz' Les Nuits d'été with St. Louis Symphony and Hans Vonk. She has performed Ravel's Shéhérazade with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Mozart's Mass in C Minor with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Cathedral Choral Society at the National Cathedral in Washington.
Theodora Hanslowe is also active in chamber music and recital. She was invited by Carnegie Hall to make her New York recital debut on the Weill Recital Hall series. She is a regular guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, with whom she performed two cantatas of Hanns Eisler ("gorgeous singing with superb control", New York Times) and a special performance of works by Bernstein, Schuman, and Schickele. Ms. Hanslowe also appeared in recital at the Musashino Cultural Foundation in Tokyo and at the Bard Festival at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. Her repertoire includes Brahms' Viola Songs, Ravel's Chansons Madécasses, and the chamber arrangement of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde.
A native of Ithaca, New York, Theodora Hanslowe graduated from Cornell University (Bachelor of Arts) and received an Artist Diploma from Peabody Conservatory.
