Vocalist - Mezzo-Soprano
About
Josepha Gayer, who "owns personality and intellect, as well as one of those distinctively beautiful natural voices." (Fort Worth Star-Telegram), has performed in opera and orchestral concerts all over North America. Her Candide with Opera Theatre of St. Louis led Steve Allen of KFUO-FM to exclaim, "Without a doubt the best 'Old Lady' I've ever seen. Her facial expressions are priceless, and her wonderfully throaty mezzo-soprano voice is perfect for a woman who is 'easily assimilated.'"
Latest Acclaim
"The broadest slapstick roles, those of the outrageous Marquise of Berkenfeld and her equally outrageous protagonist, the Duchess of Krakenthorp, were handled deliciously by mezzo-soprano Josepha Gayer (who produced a magnificent low B-flat in her introductory aria) and Jenni Harrison, who strode around smashing things."

Under the inspirational artistic direction of Colin Graham, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis enjoyed a reputation for fostering new work and young artists. Just before he died, in 2007, Graham adapted Tolstoy's novel (combining both the Levin and Anna narrative strands) for this skilful and effective opera, composed by David Carlson in a late romantic idiom somewhere between Puccini and Barber.
